ELDERLY Cheshunt residents narrowly avoided injury when a chip pan fire ripped through their home last night (Monday).
A hero neighbour rescued the pair when flames where spotted lapping out of the kitchen, in the house in Greenbank at around 7pm.
Three fire engines; two from Cheshunt and one from Hoddesdon, arrived at the scene, and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used one jet to extinguish the fire.
Fire chiefs warned people about the importance of having a working smoke alarm, after it was estimated the flames burned unnoticed for 10 minutes before the occupants were saved from the inferno.
Crew Commander Matt Lowers from Cheshunt Fire Station was first to arrive at the scene, he said: "This incident highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm. We urge anyone who doesn't already have a smoke alarm to get one, and test it every week to make sure it's working. It could save your life!
