CHAMPAGNE worth an estimated half a million pounds was stolen when a lorry driver was duped by hustlers in Hoddesdon.
The 1,128 cases of Louis Roederer bubbly were bound for the Cert Octavian warehouse in St Martins Road on June 19, when the highway thieves struck, diverting the truck to nearby Bingley Road.
It is believed the lorry driver was conned by the gang into believing that he was supposed to deliver to the other location.
A worker at Cert Octavian was unaware of the theft. He said: “I’m not aware of that issue, but we don’t like to advertise that we have expensive champagne deliveries here.”
Police have warned that the thieves may try to offload the £30-a-bottle champagne, cheaply to local licensees or retailers.
A spokeswoman for Herts Police said: “The incident took place at around 11am on Friday, 19 June on Bingley Road in Hoddesdon.
It appears that the lorry driver parked up on Bingley Raod. The offenders then stole a large quantity of champagne from the back of the lorry.
“No arrests have been made.”
