A PRIMARY school in Cheshunt has started gardening lessons for green-fingered nine and ten-year-olds.

Pupils at Bonneygrove Primary School are growing their own fruit and vegetables following a £1,500 award from women's lifestyle magazine Candis to buy plants and equipment.

The lessons are run by parent governor Alice McCormack from Greenwood Close, along with classroom volunteer Andrea Carr.

Mrs McCormack said: "The growing club was started to give the children an understanding of how things grow and where their food comes from.

"We've planted apple and pear trees, 18 raspberry canes, a bed of strawberries and some broad beans.

"Next year the children will get a chance to taste and enjoy the fruits of their labour when the produce is sold in the school tuck shop.

"The lessons take place every Wednesday morning in the school's garden. A group of four to six pupils join us each week to dig, weed, plant and tend the crops.

Candis editor Debbie Attewell said: "It's an ingenious idea for youngsters to learn how to garden and gain an appreciation of fresh fruit and veg. I wish them well and hope they have a bumper crop next year.
